My One Day Juice Cleanse
So if you were following me on Instagram yesterday, you would have seen that I did a mini one day vegetable juice cleanse.
I’ve been feeling a little sluggish lately and have been dying to do a juice cleanse for quite a while now. I crossed my T’s and dotted my i’s and got my A into G and headed to the Green Grocer to pick up my juicing ingredients. This is what I got:
- 3 Cucumbers
- 5 Lemons
- 1 Bunch of Silverbeet
- 1 Bunch of Kale
- 1 Large Knob of Ginger
- 4 Apples
- 1 Bunch of Mint
- 1 Pineapple
- 1 Carton of Coconut Water
- 3 Carrots
- 2 Beetroots
- 1 Bunch of Celery
- And i think that’s about it
So as you can see I planned this all the day before. I made sure that I had nothing to do the next day, so I could just take it easy while I detoxed.
No I know you’re probably thinking, ‘One day? Really?” and to be honest I could have gone for more, but without someone’s knowledgeable guidance and with my Diabetes it’s a bit difficult. One day went well and I definietly think I’ll be trying a longer cleanse in the future. I know to feel the effects fully and to properly emit the toxins a detox has to be longer, but this one went well and I feel spectacular today!
Anyway, back to the cleanse, this is how my day went.
I started my morning with a big glass of water and my prebiotic/probiotic supplements. Now as I didn’t have much in the form of probiotics to add to my juices, I ensured I took my supplements. These are the BowelBiotics Capsules from Lifestream.
Next I had a warm glass of water with freshly squeezed lemon juice. Lemon water helps to boost the immune system as it’s high in Vitamin C. That’s why you want to have your lemon juice in warm water as to not destroy the Vitamin C which becomes unstable in heat. It helps flush out the toxins in your body by enhancing enzyme function, stimulating your liver. It encourages healthy digestion by loosening toxins in your digestive tract and reduces the acidity in the body, thus reducing inflammation. There really are so so many benefits to this amazing drink!
After a 35 minute morning walk, made the first juice of the day (breakfast juice). I made a big batch for my 11am juice too. This was silverbeet, celery, lemon, cucumber, apple and ginger. Quite a subtle green juice, smooth and refreshing. Served with ice.
I let that settle and then did a lovely yoga flow with the intention of Gratitude! This really helped me to stay ‘present’ and focused. My energy levels were quite high and I was able to do quite an intermediate Hatha Yoga flow.
After my Yoga flow I had some of my morning green juice with additional mint, spirulina, apple and ginger. By 11am I did feel quite shaky, so definitely enjoyed the next juice. I added more apple to bring my sugar levels up a bit. I loved the dark green color of this one. I would love an item of clothing this color.
For my lunchtime juice I felt a little color was necessary, so I made this beautiful beetroot juice. In here was beetroot, lemon, carrot, apple and ginger. All my juices are diluted with water to avoid any rapid spikes in blood sugar. This juice was delicious and is a good option for newbie juicers as it’s quite sweet.
Around 3pm I felt like I needed a bit of something to perk me up. I didn’t have alot of energy, but I did walk into town so that could have brought my energy levels down a bit. I had this mid afternoon juice which had kale, lemon, cucumber, pineapple and coconut water (and lots of water) So tasty! Kind of like a Pino Colada with a twist.
By the time evening came I was quite tired, and I had quite a headache, which is expected when your detoxing. A weird thing I felt, and I’d love to know if anyone else has felt it, but my tongue felt really sensitive. Almost like a tingly feeling. I’ve read that you do detox through your tongue, as well as many other places, but the feeling was quite bizarre.
The last juice of the day was this. Silverbeet, apple, cucumber, celery, lemon and ginger. Tried to keep it simple, and like I said before was definitely feeling the detox. At this stage I also felt quite a few bouts of nausea, which was awful! Totally do NOT like that feeling at all! So the end of the day was quite difficult. My sugars stayed stable throughout the day, which I was really proud of.
I must say though that I was scared of going to sleep, and if the dinner juice I had would be enough to last me through the night, diabetes wise. So purely for that reason, I ate a small homemade bran muffin. Yes, I didn’t make it through the whole day, but I definitely could have if I wasn’t nervous about the night time sleep. You see, I’ve never done a juice cleanse before, as I’ve always been too nervous too with my Diabetes. So I’m actually really proud that I made it through the day with stable sugars. I had one low, but that was after my yoga flow, which is expected.
So yeah, eating the muffin was pretty amazing actually. I don’t know if it was because my tongue was feeling so weird, or if it was because I hadn’t eaten all day, but it was kind of amazing and I enjoyed every bite.
I woke up this morning and my sugars were spot on! And surprisingly was really that hungry or phased about food, which is weird because food is ALWAYS on my mind!
Today I’ve felt awesome all day and have had great energy levels. I had some warm oats for breakfast and a superfood smoothie for lunch from Nourish Smoothie Cart. I’ve also had a bit of pineapple and a fresh fig which was amazing!
Wrapping up, I thoroughly enjoyed my cleanse. Not only do I feel a bit lighter today, my mind has been clear and I’ve been feeling so much more motivated! I’m really lookinjg forward to future cleanses, and am looking forward to trying out some pre-made cleanses from local companies!
