It’s getting really chilly here down in the depths of the Southern Hemisphere, so this week on the blog I’ve decided to share a fresh vegetable juice recipe. This warming carrot, ginger and beetroot juice is just what you need to stay on-top of your health and to limit any nasty colds and flu’s.

Hope you’re all easing into the New Year well. It’s been beautiful weather here in Nelson. The sun’s been shining brightly these last couple days and the cool, refreshing breeze has been a breath of fresh air. I love this time of year, so much! I love getting out on the weekends, going on unknown adventures, and being immersed in nature. The sun kissed glow to the skin is always welcomed.
We met up with a gorgeous friend at the Nelson Saturday Market on the weekend (which was fab), and I stumbled across some deliciously fresh hazelnuts which I just had to have. Now, I must admit, I may have a mild obsession with this particular nut. I walk through the isles of our local Fresh Choice store and am always enticed when I discover a new product on the shelves. Recently there’s been a few popping up and I especially got excited about the launch of CHIA’s new range of gorgeous drinks. With Summer weather making more and more of an appearance, and temperatures rising, I thought it a great idea to post a smoothie recipe. This time of year I feel more inclined to eat less dense heavy foods, and rather opt for salads, steamed greens and smoothies. It’s great to feel light and energized, especially when it’s hot outside.
A regular query, which I’m sure most plant based eaters can relate with, is “Where do you get all your protein from if you don’t eat meat?” And what most don’t understand is that there is an abundance of protein in plants, seeds, grains, etc. All you need is a little education on what to combine in order to get a complete protein profile. Yay! Spring has sprung! And while I really did enjoy this Winter, I cannot wait for longer days, afternoon beach walks, refreshing salads and less washing! I don’t know if you can relate, but our washing load doubles in the winter, so I’m very much looking forward to wearing (and washing) less clothing. Another thing I’m craving is to be barefoot more. To feel the earth beneath my feet, without my toes freezing off! Can’t wait!
To toast the beginning of Spring, I decided to make a Detoxifying Green Juice recipe to begin the new season with a clean fresh start. It’s always a good time to reflect, reset and restart. After a cosy Winter, Spring (for me) is a time for increased activity and energy and what better way to achieve that then by feeling your best. That moment when you think ‘Whawhaaattt!’, where has this been all my life?
Well, my friends, that’s the moment I had after making (and tasting) this super yummy Warming Turmeric Latte. I could seriously sit and drink this all day. It’s so soothing and warming and hits all the right flavor notes. The scent of warming cinnamon and cardamom wafting through the house alone is so inviting and so relaxing!
It’s the best on a cold day and we’ve had some pretty chilly mornings and evenings lately. I certainly am looking forward to Spring which seems to be more and more evident these days. Rolling on from my post last week, where I shared a neat Infographic explaining some of the nutritional health benefits of popular culinary herbs, this week I decided to add a little bit of mint to my diet. I don’t often use mint to be perfectly honest, mainly because I seem to forget about it. Does that ever happen to you with certain foods? You’ll forget about them for ages and then one day realize ‘Oh yeah! I forgot about that! I haven’t had that in ages!’
Anyway, I spotted some fresh mint in store and it quickly found it’s way into my shopping basket.
As we all know by now, avocados are one of the most delicious additions to any healthy diet. From smashed avo toast, to toppings on a colorful salad, or sneakily the main ingredient in chocolate mousse, this fruit has grown immensely in popularity over the last couple of years.
